英文摘要 | Yang Yunshi 楊雲史 (1875-1941), named Qi, a scholar from Changshu of Jiangsu and author of Jiangshan wangli lou shi 江山萬里樓詩, was famed for his poetry. Despite the trend of adopting the Song style in poetry during the late Qing and early Republican periods, Yang promoted the Tang style instead, thus establishing himself as the first person in “the east of Yangzi” in the modern period to promote such a poetic style. As Qian Zhonglian remarked, “undoubtedly, the poet who exuberantly emulated the Tang style in modern times should be Yang Yunshi.” Yang took refuge in Hong Kong a year after the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War in 1937. He stayed there until his death in July 1941. During this time, Yang actively participated in the work of the literary community by contributing hundreds of poems. He stoked the spirit to fight against aggressors with his profound scholarship and was widely respected. In his final years Yang edited the ten juan sequel to his collected poems. The manuscript, however, was burnt during the years of the Cultural Revolution. In the past two years, the efforts of editors Ma Weizhong/Pan Hong and Yang Yuanzhang resulted in the publication of the academic editions of Yang's collections which included more than three hundred newly found poems. This essay is focused on the literary works of Yang Yunshi compiled during his Hong Kong years, chronicling his activities during his final years, and relating his Hong Kong poetry to the time by drawing references from contemporary newspapers, magazines and other literature. Eightly-five uncollected poems of Yang are identified for the first time and are appended in this essay. |
