中文摘要 | 本文以見(dar□ana)、論書(□□stra)及班智達(pa□□ita)三個梵文概念為例,探討中世紀印度文明對系統知識的理解,這包括其基本內容、特生、結構及範圍等。而問題的重心將放在宗教與知識,或信仰與理性之間的關係上。本文試圖說明,起碼從所涉及的上述三個概念來說,中世紀的印度文明並不會如啟蒙運動以降的現代西方般,把宗教與知識視為互不相容,反之,卻是把知識整合在宗教體系內,不單把知識的建立視為宗教責任之一,且也帶探索知識的知性態度進行宗教教義的探討。部份分析將放在婆羅門教與佛教對揚的例子中來辨析其內涵,最後也會稍涉印度學人是如何化解哲學之間的可能張力問題。除代表系統知識的「見」外,也會討論其載體,包括專事知識承載的特定文類「論書」及知識人類型「班智達」。 |
英文摘要 | The present article is a concise study of the basic structure, nature, domain and categories of systematical knowledge in medieval Indian, while some examples will be drawn from Tibetan tradition. The discussion will be focused on three Sanskirti terms, namely, dr□ana (philosophical system), □□stra (academic treatise) and pa□□ita (scholar of Five Science). These terms are used to define various aspects that are essential form classical Indian idea of knowledge. They are components of Indian tradition of knowledge system, no matter in Buddhist or Brahaminist context. Another focus of this article is the relationship between religion and knowledge, or spirituality and rationality. I will try to argue that, for both Indian traditions, they don’t have the strain tension that happened in their Western counterpart. Rather, the human passion for knowledge is integrated into the scholasticism of both traditions as part of religious practice. |
