英文摘要 | This paper describes a study exploring junior high school students' ability to make mathematical connections. It is based on 55 individual interviews with pupils in Year 7 at one junior high school. Results suggest that students are aware of the mathematics embedded in everyday activities. There was no evidence to support existing theories that young people have particular difficulties identifying mathematics within practical activities, nor do they restrict the label mathematics to activities involving a problem with a single or limited solution, nor to activities that require a formal rather than experimental or intuitive approach. As well, few participants seemed to relate their discussion of mathematics only to the aspect of each activity that takes the most time and attention. |
