英文摘要 | My article “He Stoops to Conquer: Linguistic Denial and Linguistic Conquest in The Henriad,” argues that the idea of a nation-state is a collaborative linguistic fantasy fashioned by the performative, theatrical discourse of the monarch to suppress, deny, and finally silence the voices of otherness. Prince Hal is first linguistically educated by Falstaff and his other tavern mates, but then he ultimately uses the theatrical language he acquires in the tavern to deliver his St. Crispin’s Day Speech on the battlefield and create an imagined sense of national identity. Hence, I want to demonstrate that the idea of the nation-state is a linguistic, theatrical fantasy that is shaped by the monarch. The theatrical knowledge that Hal acquires from his playmates in the tavern helps him construct this linguistic fantasy in the process of his national building and expansion. |
