英文摘要 | The Chinese-born France-resident writer Pao-Chuan Cheng's overseas Taiwanese student novel ”These and Those People” describes her experiences living in a foreign country after expatriation. The novel describes the nostalgia she feels for her homeland country and the way in which she develops a conscious awakening of Chinese identity from the perspective of both Taiwanese and Chinese students. From an oversea Taiwanese student historic point of view, this novel provides the possibility of scenario, which is explored within the context of Chinese and Taiwanese student parties that are held at dining tables throughout their stay in France, forty years after the separation of these two countries. Through examining the subjects of expatriation and nostalgia, the author reveals and explores the difference between Chinese and Taiwanese student's concept of what it means to be Chinese. On the Chinese students' part, inheriting the overseas Taiwanese student novels, the author represents the China image with exile wandering. For the Taiwanese students part, she builds an image of Taiwan, which presents a new Taiwanese identity that has arisen as a result of the abolition of martial law. This study approaches the personages and topics in the novel through examining a dichotomy of ”These and Those People”, including Chinese and Taiwanese students' views of their homeland and nostalgia, male and female homeland descriptions and memories of food while meeting each other and researching themselves and their homeland. As far as the homeland imagination of students of two rives is concerned, the difference of homeland writing reveals, on the one hand Cheng's recognition of homeland identity, while on the other she presents an image of Chinese writing by an attentive attitude, which is dichotomized by ”These and Those People”. With regards to the female personages' homeland conscience, Pao-Chuan Cheng's masculine aesthetics creates a subordination and object of female description. Within the metaphor of food, Pao-Chuan Cheng focuses on Taiwan's fullness and China's famine and sublimates memories of food to the nation affection. Finally, between the homeland/nation and self, she emphasizes that whether actively researching the homeland or simply experiencing life in different countries, both are representative of self-research |
