英文摘要 | August Wilhelm Schlegel calls Henry Ⅷ the epilogue to Shakespeare's ten-play historical rhapsodies, in which the dramatist both upholds and subverts the “Tudor myth” by an artful transposing of historical chronology and juxtaposing of the conflicting Catholic and Protestant perspectives. Shakespeare disconcerts Henry Ⅷ by conducting in it a jarring tone, and thereby unmasks Henry the tyrannical king. Charles Knight stresses that the age of corruption revealed in Henry Ⅷ is as sad as the age of force described in the other 9 historical rhapsodies, for in an age of corruption, “the one tyrant rides over the obligations of justice, wielding a power more terrible than that of the sword.” |
