英文摘要 | In this essay the author, a professor of education at Indiana University Kokomo, provides first-hand description, commentary, and reflection on the issue of quality in university-based teacher education programs in the United States. Two key issues which in the author's view have threatened quality and standards in that country are discussed. The first is the large number of programs that exist in the U. S., and the second is America's general resistance to alternate certification and training routes for teachers. Where the former is concerned, the author argues that program proliferation has led to a preoccupation with minimum standards rather than excellence, that it has created a surplus of teachers, which in turn perpetuates the cycle of low pay and status, and that it has diluted teachers' political influence. where the latter is concerned, the author describes recent attempts to restructure teacher training, such as the Carnegie and Holmes Group reports of the 1980's, and the increasingly popular use of a National Teachers Exam. Potential relevance of these issues to teacher education in Taiwan are briefly discussed. |
