英文摘要 | The fact that state sacrifice during the Sui and Tang dynasties was not, in many respects, in line with Confucian ritual principles gives us reason to reconsider the extent to which the state sacrifice system was Confucianized during the reforms of the Han dynasty. Through analyzing the personification of nature gods, Confucian cults, and the way sacrifices were made, this article shows that the Sui and Tang state sacrifice system retained some elements of popular cults. If, as 1 suspect, Max Weber and some other modem historians were correct in claiming that state sacrifice was nothing more than an official ceremony that had little to do with the general populace, the inclusion of elements from popular cults could have allowed state sacrifices to connect the government with the commoner and even serve as a means of controlling folk religion. |
