Underneath his peaceful transcendence, he faced the struggles of life. He was torn between being involved with politics and retreating from them, was pressured by poverty and the fate of the times, and felt the sorrows of people’s affairs during the change of dynasties. Finally, Tao Yuan-ming eliminated all of the anguishes through the enlightenment of wisdom and attained the state of simplicity, sincerity and purity of life. Nevertheless, traditional Chinese intellectuals usually had to sacrifice their political careers to maintain their independence of characteristics and spiritual freedom.
