英文摘要 | Crystal (1987) investigated the relationship between English spelling and pronunciation, and found that there was 84% of correspondence. The results of a similar study conducted by Hanna, Hodges & Hanna in 1971 showed that the spelling-sound correspondence was about 75%. For such a close association, it is desirable to construct a lexical database to study the systematic relationship between the spelling and the sound, based on the distribution and combination patterns of English letters. Since the Education Innovation Council suggested that English education adopt phonics instruction and start at the fifth and sixth grades in primary school level from the school year of 90[90bb], under such circumstances, it is of greatest importance to take advantage of this teaching method to provide positive vocabulary teaching and learning effect. Focusing on how to activate the English sound-letter knowledge to enhance vocabulary learning, this paper discusses the development of a multimedia E-learning environment offering an advanced lexical retrieval subsystem and a spelling-sound teaching/learning subsystem, based on the Interactionist model of Second Language Acquistition (SLA) theory and the guidelines suggested by Chapelle (1998, 2001) for constructing Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) activities. Results from questionnaires given to 91 in-service English teachers at the secondary school level showed that these subjects considered the presented learning environment to be highly beneficial in facilitating English vocabulary teaching and learning. |
