中文摘要 | 在廣大的史本賽研究學術中,史本賽與煉金術之關連始終是為學蓍所忽視的一環。這可能是學者們認為無法建立作者與煉金術之實證關係,但無容質疑的,史本賽不但對文藝復興時期各種神祕知識有深刻的了解,也將這些知識運用在他的創作中。煉金術之主要目的為發現能點鐵成金的點金石。煉金術士相信若能找到夢寐以求的點金石,不但能達成發財之夢,在更高的精神層次上,亦可獲得長生不老之祕方,得以永生。因而煉金術無論在神祕的精神或實用的層次,其最終目的所關懷的是轉化與重生之過程;這可應用在物質世界及人的內心世界,因金屬物質與人是認同的。也就是說,若低等無價值之金屬如鐵,可透過轉化過程而提升為珍貴完美的金,人亦可藉清除使心靈不完美的罪惡,使其提昇至完美的境界。《仙后》第一書的男主角紅十字武士,從一無名武士轉化為殺死惡龍而解救英格蘭的聖喬治/亞當/基督;其精神追尋與再生過程,類似煉金術寓意的黑-白-紅三個步驟。紅十字武土被人面蛇身的「錯誤」纏住、被巨人囚禁、後又面對「絕望」險些自殺。皆代表煉金過程的黑暗期。史詩第十章紅十字武士被帶往「神聖之屋」,接受各種清除身體與精神罪惡的治療。此時出現了帶給紅十字武士重生之眾煉金女王,進入顯示煉金術成功的白色時期。第一書的最後兩章,紅十字武士之軀體靠來自生命之樹所流出的香油、神聖泉水、及天上之雨露得到保護,殺死邪惡火龍,得以重生。此刻煉金過程由象徵重生的白色轉為紅色,是煉金術之最後也是最高境界,煉金成功。紅十字武士經過一連串的轉化過程,成為英格蘭主保聖喬治,也昇華為紅色君王=太陽=金。 |
英文摘要 | In alchemy, the transmutation of metals signifies the conversion of man from a lower to a higher order of existence; in other words, the development of an individual from imperfection to perfection is analogous to the alchemical transformation of base metal into gold. In Book I of Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene, the Red Crosse Knight's process of spiritual quest and regeneration, beginning as a sinful young man, to the final status of Saint George/Adam/Christ, can be elucidated according to the patterns of nigredo-albedo-rubedo manifested in alchemical processes as well as allegories. In Cantos i, vii-ix, Red Crosse's fight with the serpent monster Errour, his imprisonment in Orgoglio's dungeon, his encounter with Despair, all correspond to the alchemical stage of nigredo. In Canto x, in the House of Holiness, he undergoes a series of procedures in cleansing his spiritual sins and physical corruptions. The appearance of life-giving alchemical queens, together with Red Crosse's vision of Jerusalem, mark this canto as the beginning of the alchemical stage of albedo. In Cantos xi-xii, he is again regenerated into a new life, first by the balm from the Tree of Life and finally, by his slaying of the Dragon. This is the final stage of alchemical opus, the stage of rubedo, in which Red Crosse is transformed into a Christian Saint/Adam, but also alchemically, a Red King=Sol=Go1d. |
