英文摘要 | In the middle Tang literary movement known as "Ancient Style"(guwen), Han Yu (768-824) and Liu Zongyuan (773-819) enjoyed equal fame. Liu's major goal throughout his life was to promote the ideals of Confucius and to bring benefits to the people. Liu was not only influenced by the Confucian school, he also adopted the strong points of the Mohists, Legalists, Political Strategists, and even the Taoists, all of whom were active during the Warring States period (770-221 B.C.). He combined what he felt to be the best qualities of each of them. This diversified background strongly influenced Liu's ideas on education. During the middle Tang Dynasty in which Liu was active, while military governors were controlling the outlying prefectures, the eunuchs-palace servants who waited directly on members of the imperial family-had arrogated to themselves major power at court, extorting excessive taxes and levies from the people. Because Liu was concerned for the people's livelihood, he did his utmost as an individual to reform this abuse of government administration. But as a result of his efforts to do goodness and to benefit society, he alienated those in power, and was at one point banished to the desolate and uncultivated area of Liuzhou (in modem Guangxi). He nevertheless continued to challenge the authorities and to attempt reform through education. The aim of the present monograph is, based on Liu's own writings, to determine his educational philosophy, his educational goals, and his own methods of scholarly research, as well as his views on the relationship between teacher and student and the influence of each on the other. |
