英文摘要 | Little research has been done to examine how a company's safety climate influences lone workers (those whose job involves long stretches of time alone). This study was the first phase of a broader project to develop a scale to evaluate safety climate for the trucking industry and, ultimately, the survey results will be used to initiate safety climate and culture changes. The purpose of the current study was to explore what key factors or indicators lone workers (e.g., truck drivers) consider when forming their perceptions about company safety. Our goal was to design a set of items particular to this industry for a questionnaire which could be used to explore whether lone-working truckers develop a sense of safety climate the same as do workers in close proximity. Fifty-three semi-structured interviews were conducted at one large trucking company and two truck stops in the US to gather qualitative information. A list of 100 meaningful statements (54 regarding overall company-level (organization) perspective, 39 for the dispatcher/direct supervisor-level (group) perspective, and 7 regarding company vs. dispatcher interactions) were identified and compiled from the interview results to serve as a basis for developing a safety climate scale specific for the trucking industry. Major themes were extracted by the research team based on the statements: the top three themes for organizational-level safety climate were Relative Priority of Safety, Policy/Log Violations, and Safety Rules and Practice; the top three themes for dispatcher/group-level safety climate were Supportiveness & Caring, Relative Priority of Safety, and Policy/Log Violations; and the two major themes regarding company vs. dispatcher interactions were regarding Internal Consistency and Supervisory Care Promotion. Three approaches of the etiology of climates were used to explain these recurring themes. |
