英文摘要 | Introduction: Proper helmet use can reduce head injuries in motorcycle accidents. Mandatory helmet use law was effective since June 1997. Mortality and morbidity from head injuries decreased thereafter. However, there is yet no study about the current status of helmet use. Material & Method: Downtown, thoroughfare, the rural area, the university and the primary school were chosen for observation in daytime. Thoroughfare was observed at night for comparison. Proper helmet use was defined as the standard motorcycle helmet was worn in the correct position with its chinstrap fastened. Results were analyzed with Chi square test and P<0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Result: There were 1,200 riders identified. Although 1,019 riders put something on their head, 181 riders wore nothing on their head. Among those with something on their head, 82.4% wore helmets properly, 14.8% wore the helmet inappropriate and 2.7% wore something other than motorcycle helmet. Proper use of helmets was better in drivers than passengers. Helmet use was best at the thoroughfare but worst at the primary school. In the thoroughfare, daytime was better than at night. Inappropriate helmet use was most common downtown, however, primary school had the highest incidence of non-helmet use. Conclusion: Although our mandatory helmet use law has been effective for years, improper use remains common, especially at the primary school. We should provide more safety education and whole-size qualified helmets. |
