英文摘要 | For the detection of the anti-GM1 antibody activity in Chinese patients with motor neuron disease (MND) and idiopathic peripheral neuropathy (IPN), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used. Sera were collected from 120 individuals in whom 52 patients had MND, 38 patients had IPN and 30 patients were from out-patient clinics for physical check-up without neurological deficits as normal control group. Their sera were examined for IgM anti-GM1 antibodies. Sixty-two percent (62%, 32/52) of the patients with MND were positive for anti-GM1 activity. Eighty-three percent (83%, 25/30) of the patients with pure lower motor neuron disease and 32% (7/22) of the patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis were positive for anti-GM1 activity. Twenty-six percent (26%, 10/38) of the patients with IPN were positive for anti-GM1 activity. These results showed that anti-GM1 antibodies were common in Chinese MND patients, as in Caucasian MND patients. Its importance remains to be determined but the results of measurement of anti-GM1 antibodies has a potential predictive role in the management of MND and IPN. In addition, the results of measurement of anti-GM1 antibodies may be useful in potential treatment of MND and IPN. |
