他在自傳《西學東漸記》(My Life in china and America)中闡述他如何在兩種文化的衝擊下尋找自我。 |
英文摘要 | The first group of Chinese laborers, in hopes of making a fortune during the Gold Rush, left their poverty-stricken and war-ravished homeland and arrived in California in 1847. About twenty-five years later, the Chinese population became so large that the whites were alarmed and started to treat them as all forms of peril. Consequently, various forms of legislation not only prohibited more Chinese from entering the United States but also limited the activities of those Chinese already there. In this hostile environment, Yung Wing (1828-1912) and Wu Tigfang (1842-1922) expressed their viewpoints on the cultural conflicts between the East and the West and racial discrimination. This article intends to analyze their different attitudes form a literary and cultural perspective. Yung wing was the first Chinese student studying in the Unities States. In his autobiography, My Life in China and America, he tried to related his search for identity in the conflicts of these two different cultures. As the "and" in the title shows, he attempted to find equilibrium between these two. However, his ambivalent attitude only makes him lose his own original identity because of his inability to assimilate the strength of either culture. Wu Tingfang's experience is quite different from Yung's. in his America thorugh the spectacles of an Oriental Diplomat, we understand that though he received western education, he was nevertheles strongly influenced by his Chinese legacy. Therefore, he was able to treat the strengths and weaknesses of both cultures from a detached perspective and find a true identity in face of the impact of western culture. |
