| 英文摘要 | Fin de siecle, end of the century, is a phrase often applied to the last ten years of the nineteenth century. Orthodoxically, it is considered as a transitional period "full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." The tendency of the world of art in this perd is criticized by the traditionalists as making more sound than sense and having more flesh than soul. This period's fury is the result of a long cry against Victorian hypocrisy, scientific materialism, and ugly industrialism since the Pre-Raphaelite movement. "Art for art's sake" and "All art is quite useless" are two provocative slogans of this period. This period reaches its pinnacle in the 1890s with Oscar Wilde and Aubrey Beardsley. This period, in the mean time, is a constant flux and reflux of all sorts of movements: aesthetic movement, decadent movement, symbolist movement, and naturalism. Salome, a work of art with Wilde's script and Beardsley's illustrations, is what I think the influx of all the currents. It is the culminated representation of the late Victorian reality, especially the fin de siecle. The aim of this paper, therefore, is an attempt to bring to light the millieu mirrored in the collaborated artwork of Wilde and Beardsley-Salome. I will model myself after Erich Auerbach's fashion in interpreting the theme, the style, and the technique of both the script and the illustrations in their work. Also, rather than to align with the orthodoxy in viewing The Importance of Being Earnest as Wilde's best play, my intent is to justify that Salome is the work which gives vent to Wild's as well as to Beardsley's tour de force. |
