英文摘要 | Toward the end of the Ching Dynasty, China became weak as a naticn and its people were poor. Confucian ethics was then blamed for its feudalism and conservatism and thus for getting in the way of economic development. On the other hand, some of the countries in East Asia that have been influenced by Confucian culture have recently attracted much attention to their economic accomplishments. Confucian culture is then credited with the stability and harmony it offers. At first glance, these two points of view appear to contradict each other. At a deeper level, however, some elements of Confucian ethics indeed undermine economic development where as others encourage and foster it. Even more importantly, the function of those elements and conditions varies from one period of time to another. For instance, in the previous age of "industrialism", the confucian emphasis on "following nature" and "harmonious whole" was regarded as an impediment to progress because it implied a disapproval of "mastering nature" and "expansionism". In contrast, his emphasis is viewed today as a paradigm both of "environmentalism" and of the idea that "environmental protection ensures the ever-lasting operation of business." |
