英文摘要 | We replicate and extend studies of occupational status attainment by Lin, Ensel, and Vaughn (1981) and DiMaggio and Mohr (1985), concentrating on the effects of social network resources and cultural capital on the status attainment process in Taiwan. Drawing upon data from the 1992 Social Change Survey in Taiwan, we found that the basic claim of the social resources argument is well supported by indicating that the status of the contact persons and the found job are positively related, i. e., the higher the status of the contact person, the higher the status of the found job. But the second theme of the argument that contacts persons via weak ties results in status gains is not confirmed. The Strength of social ties and the status of found jobs is negatively related only in the case of first job, but not for job seekers' current job. Results suggest some modification of the social resources argument because individuals with low status prior jobs benefit from weak social ties, whereas individuals with high status prior jobs do not. Drawing on Bourdieu's work on cultural capital, this paper report the finding of an effort to assess the impact of one component of status cultural participation - cultural capital - on the occupational status attainment. A composite measure of cultural capital and education have a significant impact on the status of the found job and access to social resources. |
