| 英文摘要 | This paper is intended to examine Candide’s utopias in Voltaire’s Candide. Candide is forced to step on his journey to search for his beloved Cunégonde. Before he sets out, he believes in optimism which makes people believe that everything is well for the best possible world. However, what he sees and experiences on his journey repeatedly challenge his optimism from his teacher, Pangloss. In the novel, there are three utopias. The first one is in the Baron’s castle which represents the traditional paradise in feudal time. The second one is Eldorado discovered in remote mountains in South America. Eldorado is the climax of the three utopias on Candide’s journey. The last one is the garden near Constantinople where Candide and his fellows cultivate their garden to survive. Through examining Candide’s own utopias in the novel, we may also find out some of Voltaire’s ideas about his own utopia which works in a different way from the Utopia of Thomas More. More than making up a place that does not exist, Voltaire presents his realistic ideas about searching for one’s own utopia through Candide’s quest for his own utopia. |
