英文摘要 | Previous studies showed that anxiety disorders were one of the most prevalent problems affecting the quality of life in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Coloring in mandala drawings has been suggested as an adjuvant therapy for breast cancer to relief anxiety. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the potential effects of coloring art activities on anxiety reduction and physiological responses in hospitalized female breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy at one regional teaching hospital in southern Taiwan. All participants were recruited and assigned to the coloring mandala (n=12), plaid drawing (n=11), free-from drawing (n=12), and control groups in a randomized control trial (RCT) from February 2018 to April 2019. Analyzed results showed that the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory scores in the coloring mandala group were notably reduced from 44.9 to 33.7 (p=0.034). There were no significant changes after the intervention of coloring activities with respect to physiological responses. Overall, the present study revealed that coloring in mandala drawings could effectively reduce the levels of anxiety in breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Coloring in mandala drawings can be used as a means to reduce anxiety in breast cancer patients. Future studies can be carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of coloring in mandala drawings in cancer patients receiving clinical care. |
