中文摘要 | Entangled in a love triangle, the heroine of Shaw's Candida is forced to choose between her husband and an intruder. She turns their conflict skillfully into an auction and invites them to bid for her love. But after they have made their offers, she unexpectedly announces that the winner is the weaker of the two. Her husband Morell thinks that he has lost her because he is using his strength to compete with his rival's weakness. However, Candida the auctioneer confirms that Morell is the weaker and he winner because he cannot afford to lose her, who is the sum of all loving care to him--she is his wife, his mother, and his sister. On the contrary, Marchbanks the intruder, who approaches Candida as a weak man who needs to be taken care of, is a man with strength, who can do well without her. It is in this strange but smart way--by selling herself--that Candida solves her family crisis. And in the love auction, both the husband and the intruder are guided to become disillusioned and enlightened: the strong one is able to discover his own weakness, and the weak one is able to see his own strength. Morell learns the value of love and is no more chauvinistic. On the other hand, Marchbanks realizes that Candida loves Morell and that domestic life is not suitable for a romantic poet like himself. He leaves Candida willingly. And Candida is the navigator who guides Morell and Marchbanks through their transforma- tion. |
