英文摘要 | The Western Rail Line (Taiwan Trunk Line) in Taiwan was completed in 1908. In 1909, in order to cope with the rapidly rising demand for repairs, the Railway Administration of the Japanese colonial government launched a project to extend maintenance facilities encompassing new workshops, paint shops and transfer table (turntable) in the Taipei Railway Factory. This historical site is situated in the same location as the new Taipei MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) station. The conservation strategy represents the first implementation of a removing conservation plan for Cultural Property in Taiwan since it was enacted in 2005. This article focuses on the best conservation strategy for railroad heritage and explores the representation of “Authenticity” of remains (consisting of the site itself, building, components, machinery and setting). In practical terms it consists of interactive archaeological exploration, conservation intervention in accordance with circumstances, and interdisciplinary research. Through the contrast of early industrial development during the beginning of the Japanese Colonial Period, it should be concluded that the expansion and disappearance of the first generation Taipei Railway Factory demonstrates the unique and outstanding value of industrial heritage: modernity. |
