英文摘要 | The enrollment of graduate school has rapidly increased in Taiwan. There were 1,697 graduate schools established during the 2000-2013. Not only a dynamic quantitative growth occurred, but it also led to quality change. Especially when the industry-university cooperation has become the new mission for universities, As a result, the more projects the advisor undertakes, the more opportunities graduate students have to serve as adviser’s research assistant (RA). Has the relationship between the adviser and advisees changed? In this study, 32 graduate students were interviewed with semi-structural interview which was based on Principal-agent Theory and Mentoring Function Theory consisting of the initial engagement and commitment, interaction and feedback. According to research findings, six conclusions were offered. First, graduate student assistants from different departments show a variety of motivations. Secondly, the assistants tend to see themselves as students, instead of research assistants, and take the research job as a part of their learning experience at university. Thirdly, graduate students are used to call their advisors the boss but they do not take it seriously. Next, doctoral students have better connections with their advisors than master students. Finally, academic advisors’ unethical behavior can potentially affect advisees. Last but not least, we intended to provoke more ideas of graduate education policies to authorities and it is also expected to give university some suggestions to improve the quality of graduate student learning. |
