英文摘要 | This article argues two words ”jian (戔)” and ”zhoutu (州徒)” in the piece ”The King Is Not Necessarily Secure (君人者何必安哉)” from viewpoints of exegetics, syntax and phonology, and show that the word ”jian (戔)” stands for ”jian (剗)” or ”cuo (瑳)” which means ”polish”, the word ”zhoutu (州徒)” stands for ”zhoushe (州社) which means ”a village shrine”. The meaning of ”you bai yu san hui er bu jian (有白玉三回而不戔)” is that the king of CHU state has a three armful huge white jade but is not yet polished.Several characters of this piece are obscure, but the general idea is rather clear. FAN WU (范戊) criticized three errors of the king of the CHU state. The first error is that the king has no regard for state music. The second error is that the king slights women at his seraglio. The third error is that the king slights people's amusement at village shrines. These errors run counter to the spirit of his ancestors. If he will not correct his errors, he cannot be necessarily secure. This is the gist of FAN EU's remonstrance. |
