英文摘要 | Michael Oakeshott in his philosophical thinking explicates the postulates of history as a mode of experience, and distinguishes this mode from other modes, such as science, art, and practice. This article explicates two main topics in Oakeshott's philosophical history: first, the idea of historical past as dead past, the past that no longer has any connection with the present; and second, the idea of the configuration of historical events as a coherent whole. In explaining these topics, this article argues following theses. First, Oakeshott clarifies the debates concerning whether history is science or not. Second, as regards the relationship between historical past and the present, Oakeshott admits that history viewed as myriad traditions can be constituted as resources for our present practical activities. Nevertheless, he makes a great effort to distinguish historical past as a dead past from practical past at the present time. For otherwise history will be distorted by political ideologies and doctrines. Third, Oakeshott's idea of the configuration of historical events is formulated on the basis of a coherent theory of historical truth. This idea criticizes the view of history as an objective and fixed world of the past, the past that can recalled by historians, and refutes any external and projective principles applying to the judgment of historical facts and truth. In addition to that, it denies not only the so-called "end of history" proclaimed by the Hegelian philosophy of history, but also any idea of epistemological certainty. |
