英文摘要 | Previous research has suggested that the prototypical clause order for English if-conditionals is sentence-initial rather than final (80/20 split). Our results suggest that if-conditionals are used more often in final position in business English as opposed to other types of English genres. In addition to the information structuring functions suggested by most previous research, this study proposes that writers of English business letters choose between an initial or a final if-conditional based on eight different complex pragmatic and business strategic goals. That is, while both constructions are acceptable, writers of English business letters may prefer using the final if-conditionals in order to create specific effects that meet pragmatic, business strategic, marketing and politeness needs. |
