英文摘要 | Social organizations, a kind of associations, underscore the value of getting together among people and provide more diverse interests and channels to residents in community to take part in numerous activities of voluntary organizations. The purpose of this study is to explore empirically the Taiwanese social organizations’ characteristics, autonomy, initiatives and social impacts by utilizing a part of data resulted from the authors’ NSC project titled The Survey of Social Organizations in Taiwan--Organizational Characteristics, Autonomy, Social Participation and Impacts. The major findings can be highlighted as follows: Firstly, social organizations in Taiwan have grown drastically in terms of the number of organization. Yet the growth of its membership does not display a parallel force, resulting in a peculiar phenomenon of “the Hollow Social Groups”. Secondly, the establishment and development of social organizations are considerably autonomous, indicating that their founders have rarely obtained initial support from either the Taiwan government or for-profit organizations. The same result can be found in the recruitment of personnel and decision making, which are seldom intervened by founders or their families. Thirdly, the engagement of social organizations in public sphere prefers those matters of social education to the participation and advocacy of political issues and activities. |
