英文摘要 | This paper examines the effect of reading mode (silent reading versus reading aloud) on incidental vocabulary acquisition among 34 engineering majors enrolled in an ESP course at a private university in Central Taiwan. During the six-week experimental treatment, each participant encountered six words during silent reading and six words during reading aloud. L1 translation tests were administered before and after treatment, and the pretest/posttest score change for each target word was assessed. Statistical analysis (multivariate regression, two-way ANOVA, and t-test/U-test comparison) was performed on the data. Evidence regarding the overall effect of reading mode was inconclusive. However, low proficiency students appeared to benefit more from reading aloud than from reading silently, and generally displayed greater vocabulary gains. Both reading passage difficulty and target word part of speech significantly influenced vocabulary gains. |
