英文摘要 | English for Specific Purpose (ESP) has increasingly been recognized as one of the main pedagogical approaches to teach literacy skills in the domain of second language learning. This emerging trend in Taiwan not only reflects the need to design purpose-oriented and learning-centered syllabus, but also establishes the identity of Applied English Department (AED) in most polytechnics and universities today. Nevertheless, despite the potentially promising ESP trend after long-waited decades since the 1960s, most AEDs in Taiwan are ill-prepared for this interdisciplinary teaching endeavor. While professional subject specialists generally lack both the expertise and motivation to teach English as a second language, General English (GE) language specialists prove less sensitive to elusive discourse and transient genre of the literacy skills on many professional subjects applied to the working fields. What makes it worse is the recent skepticism placed by some members in the university evaluation committee, Taiwan, that see diversity of academic background in the AED—the assumed backbone of ESP pedagogy—a grave shortcoming. To be square with the above concerns, the paper proposes to enter ESP tutors in the AEDs based upon reasons illustrated its main body of argument. Structurally, a review of AEDs’ rationale for coming into being and the current dilemma will serve as the discussion background in the first section. The second section will bring forth at least partially reasons for this uneasiness suffered by the AEDs from an agential perspective. The paper subsequently calls for ESP tutors in place. Despite the arguments, the paper remains cautious though. It does not take for granted that its recommendation represents a rosy picture. Instead it uses the Waiting for Godot metaphor to depict the current hesitance about the ESP pedagogy, calling for more effort of building an ESP community to press through. |
