英文摘要 | The purpose of this study is to examine both the general and country-specific leading indicators of 1997 currency crisis for seven East Asian economies. Instead of the conventional un-weighted signal approach, the weighted approach, which considers both the number and the level of signals in selecting indicators, is applied in this study. In general, net foreign capital flow, export, real exchange rate, consumer price index, production index, and stock index are found the most common leading indicators of 1997 crisis. The country-specific indicators, which reflect each economy's various pre-crisis macroeconomic conditions, are different across economies. Finally, based on selected indicators, the vulnerability index, which shows how vulnerable an economy will face currency crisis in the future, is presented. |
