英文摘要 | The study circle is a mechanism to promote adult education and community reform. This research explores the development, features, and functions of study circles in Kaohsiung City, in order to provide a sound basis for promoting study circles in the future. Because, in Taiwan, the term "study circles", is often misused interchangeably with the terms "training/encounter group,""small private learning group," and "large private learning group," this research first had to distinguish the study circle from those the other types of groups. Having clarified the definition of study circle, information about study circles was collected through interviews and questionnaire surveys, including 53 leaders and 93 members of study circles. The main findings were as follows: 1.The development of study circles in Kaohsiung City has its own unique context and long history as well. Their development has been promoted mainly by particular individuals, groups, and institutions, and intertwines with trends in the society. 2.Based on their origin, study circles are grouped in to six types: those which were established through the help of Ms.Kuei-Ying Lu, the help of Kaohsiung City Library, the help of "Yung-Fan(Sailing)Women Society"; those which evolved from or were subsidiaries to training/encounter groups; those which evolved from or were subsidiaries to groups other than training/encounter groups; and those which developed independently. 3.The operation of these study circles has demonstrated some process of maturation. For example: they have formed rules for the election of leaders and selection of reading materials. The idea of promoting study circles is popular within these groups. 4.The scope of the study circles is still limited to the sphere of individual private life, as reflected in the reading materials selected. That is to say, members' concerns do not include the public dimensions of their life. 5.Besides, these study circles have the following limitations: they have many features of training/encounter groups and their members are limited to the socio-economic upper-middle class, who usually have access to educational resources. Accordingly, this research provides suggestions in three areas: 1.the promotion of the values and concepts of study circles; 2.the improvement of the operation of study circles; and 3.the development of policies to establish counseling organizations as well as provide financial aid to study circles. |
