英文摘要 | In a series of papers the interrelations between pain relief, change in tooth pulp pain threshold and psychological variables were investigated in patients with long-lasting muscular pain and referred to pain clinics. The patients were treated clinically with either acupuncture or TENS. In post-treatment experimental sessions the patients completed psychological inventories and the tooth pain threshold was measured following TENS and acupuncture. In two retrospective studies patients (neck-shoulder and orofacial pain respectively) were treated long-term with TENS or acupuncture. Patients who improved clinically showed a significant correlation between pain relief and increase in pain thresholds. Such a relation was not found in a prospective study. The responsiveness correlated significantly to mood factors during treatment. The pain threshold increase after acupuncture could be predicted by the factors relaxation and stress while the pain threshold after TENS was predicted by the factors pleasantness and anxiety. Patients who did not improve following sensory stimulation showed higher scores in depression and anxiety compared to patients who improved. Acupuncture responders exhibited higher scores on "powerful others" subscale of Multidimentional Health Locus of Control than TENS responders. The TENS responders tended to have higher scores on the "internal" subscale. The results suggest that acupuncture and TENS influence both somatic and psychological parameters and that the relation between these are important for the outcome of treatment. |
