英文摘要 | Advances in information and communication technologies have led to the rapid development of online teaching and learning. However, a literature review shows that comparative research of online teaching and learning in Asia's open universities has been limited. To better understand the current situation and possible future development, a comparative study of online teaching and learning in the Asian region has become a pressing task and collaboration amongst open and distance education scholars is much needed. This study was led by the present author and 10 open universities have participated, including those in Shanghai, Honk Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, South Korea, the Philippines, Israel, India and Thailand. The method of comparative study and the online questionnaire survey were employed. The questionnaires regarding students' experience and perceptions of online learning in three languages, Chinese (in both traditional and simplified characters), English and Korean, were completed by 1,614 learners. This paper reports on 8 topics about online teaching and learning in Asia's open universities, including development of online teaching platforms; functions of online teaching platforms; number of online courses offered and the disciplines they belong' theories of instructional design used for course development; learning venues and e-library, advantages of online learning; disadvantages of online learning; and barriers to online learning. It was expected that this study could be an impetus to further collaborative efforts amongst scholars in Asia's open universities. The study also concludes that the emergent online teaching and learning paradigm is developing rapidly in Asia and will soon catch up with the West. However, because of the Asian traditions, it seems that online learners in this area need more teacher guidance in their learning process. |
