| 中文摘要 | 自六書學興起後,於假借一端,其為用字抑或造字?假借字有無本字可尋等問題,聚訟不已;本文撰寫之目的,在於從根源上探討假借之本貌,以疏通各家假借說之歧異。除前言、結語外:分一.早在「六書」體系成形以前「假借」的情況已經存在、二.《說文》訓解字之本義、三.經籍訓詁上之假借與《說文》之假借、四.《說文》系假借之發展:四個部分陳述。假借之發生在語言文字上本屬必然之現象,自甲骨文已然有之;而《說文》雖承漢儒「六書」之觀念為之一一界說,然其內文在訓解字之本形、本義,本不足憑之以言假借;惟不明假借則無以訓解古籍,古籍中之用字,往往不合《說文》之本義;假借既為六書之一,於《說文》說解中又無明確之資料,歷代治《說文》者,乃各抒己見,以致眾說紛紜。其實各家皆有一得之見,並無是非可言。 |
| 英文摘要 | Since the formulation of the Sixs kinds of characters (liushu) in forming Chinese characters, there has been a series of discussions regarding the practice of “jiajie,” borrowing a character for a word that is pronounced equally but has a totally different meaning. Is the act of “jinajie” a way of making use of words or actually a way of forming words? Can we find their original words for those borrowed characters? Questions like these have been asked by scholars over the years and they evoke arguments. The paper aims to explain the discrepancies by exploring the evolvement of the practice of borrowing. In addition to the introduction and the conclusion, the paper can be divided into four sections to deals with: 1) that the practice of borrowing has existed long before the formulation of Six-Principles Theory; 2) the interpretation of original meaning of a character based on Shuowen jiezi; 3) the presentation of the borrowing defined by the Scholium of Chinese classics and by Shuo-wen; 4) the development of the practice of “jiajie” following Shuo-wen. Phonetic borrowing is a natural act in terms of the use of language and words, which can be seen in the oracle bone scripts. Shuo-wen provides definitions for the Six-Principles Theory mainly to interpret the form and the meaning of each Chinese character, so it is not sufficient for the exploration of borrowed characters. However, the understanding of borrowing is essential for the interpretation of classics, even though the use of words in the classics does not fit with the meanings listed in Shuo-wen. Borrowing, on the one hand, is one of the six principles, but, on the other, is not clearly defined in Shuo-wen; therefore, scholars tend to express their own interpretations and thus discrepancies have been derived. In fact, there is no right answer. |
