中文摘要 | 二十世紀以來,現代語誩學一直影響西方文學批評的發展。不論是形式主義還是結構主義的研究方法,均將文學作品比附為語言、語法句子甚或符號系統,再加以分析。直至七十年代,不少文學評論家開始質疑語言對真實世界的指涉功能,並提出種種有關應用語言學方法分析文學作品的問題。本文嘗試以「沉默」的概念,揭示近三十年來西方文學批評中,這種針對以語言學為依歸的逆向發展。論題所及的「喧囂的沉默」,乃指當代文學批評中一個以「身體」作為研究對象的流派。一方面,它拒絕一切借助語言學、附號學所引發的詮釋活動;另一方面,它強調文學作品中沉默身體的形象,具備在不同時代和地域,在心理、社會、政治、文化等不同層面的意涵。本文旨在探究這個尚在發展的文學批評流派,在過往三十年的發展情況,並進一步探討當中研究方法的限制。本文希望有關的討論,能夠一個嶄新的角度,俾能更清楚理解二十世紀末文學批評發展的路向。 |
英文摘要 | Since the beginning of the 20th century, modern linguistics has largely influenced literary criticism. By assimilating Saussure’s linguistic method, literary texts, whether they use the Formalistic or Structuralistic approach, have been analyzed as a language, a grammatical phrase or even a system of signs. In the last thirty years, however, some of the critics have questioned the referential capability of language as well as the applications, of the linguistic method to literary studies. In the light of the concept of silence, we propose to define one of the different orientations in literary criticism of our time. The notion “expressive Silence” proposed in this study designates a critical perspective, taking the “body” as the analytical object of literary studies and refusing all the excessive interpretative practice simulated by the linguistic and semantic methods. The emphasis of the referential function of our silent body draws attention to the excess of language and makes the expression of the inexpressible possible at last. This paper investigates the development of the literary trend “rhetoric of body” in the last three decades. Besides defining both the promises and limitations of the analyzing method it employs, this paper attempts further to suggest a comprehensive approach to the evolution of literary criticism of our time. |
