英文摘要 | The transformation of health care and health information management in the United States of America (US) is moving forward at a rapid pace and gaining momentum. Health information technology and the acknowledged goal to create and support a healthier nation are primary drivers of this change. At the same time, improving the overall quality of care and patient safety, greater consumer empowerment, and gaining control over escalating costs have risen to the forefront. In 2006, the cost of health care in the United States exceeded $2 trillion, representing over 16% of gross national economic output. This compares to an average range of 7% to 11% experienced by most other developed countries around the world. Even with the extraordinary dollar levels being spent for US health care, there are still millions of Americans with no health care coverage or lacking appropriate coverage to meet their medical needs. In many cases, this results in delayed medical care and treatments because individuals just cannot afford it. With overall costs and complexity of the US health care system projected to continue to accelerate in the future, this is one of the most critical issues facing this country today. The actual use of electronic health record systems and other health information technology solutions vary widely across the US, with many health care providers still utilizing paper-based health records or a combination of paper and electronic record systems, or what is referred to as a hybrid environment. Best projections indicate that only a small portion of the 800,000 physicians nationwide make us of electronic health records, and of those that do, only a portion of the available features are fully utilized. With the use of health information technology and health information management opportunities on the rise, projections point to a shortage of qualified applicants to meet future workforce needs. The American Health Information Management Association is the professional community that improves healthcare by advancing best practices and standards for health information management and the trusted source for education, research, and professional credentialing. This paper provides insight on how health information technology is transforming health care in the United States, and how the American Health Information Management Association is mobilizing the network of professionals and moving the profession forward Larger, Louder and Faster through leadership engagement. |
