英文摘要 | Since its publication, William Styron's The Confessions of Nat Turner has aroused one of the most heated critical debates in literary history; some questioning the credibility of a white non-slave writer's insight into the mind of a black slave, others defending him as a conscientious novelist through a variety of approaches. The controversy focuses on history vs. fiction. Yet little attention has been paid to discussing the narrative strategy and the generic significance of the novel as a “literary confession.” This paper examines the novel's first-person point of view and language style, and claims that Styron is trying to “humanize” a slave and to think vicariously in the position of slaves. His achievement is no less significant than Harriet Beecher Stowe in Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852) that caused that Civil War, and the autobiographical fugitive-slave Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass (1845) that bears first-hand witness to slave misery. |
