英文摘要 | Any study about a humorous event/reaction can contribute a little to understanding an individual personality and typical ethnic attitudes toward life. This research brings Japanese and Taiwanese together in their responses to 22 questions after watching the American movie Patch Adams. Nation looms more important than gender. The ethnic groups evaluated nine items similarly, thirteen differently; gender made five such items differ. Most people agree Patch Adams is humorous. More Taiwanese than Japanese believe that humor competence can be learned, and thus they like to be his co-worker at Pediatrics, non-Pediatrics, and other work places to emulate him. While Taiwanese struggle with connections between innate and learnable humor competence, Japanese are confident: those believing its innate quality do not think of its learnability, and vice versa (Q3-Q16 have higher r-vlaue than all other pairs in Table 5). Taiwanese are perplexed by whether a person acting funny is called a clown, Japanese sure of it. Taiwanese believe that Patch Adams more humorous than they, those judging themselves humorous are more likely to rate Patch Adams humorous. Significantly more women than men (89% to 73%; Q4) enjoyed Patch Adams' actions. In a hierarchical society, humor, especially PA's, is more suitable for children than adults. |
