英文摘要 | In the summer of 2002, large areas of the planted Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata var. lanceolata) in central Taiwan appeared wilting on the foliages of individual branches or of the entire trees. The symptoms of Chinese fir decline initially began with the leaves wilting then turned brown from the top of the tree, and finally the entire foliage wilted or the entire tree died. However, the vascular and root tissues of the wilted trees did not show discoloration and lesion. Holes made by bark beetles were commonly observed in wilted and healthy tree trunks, and there were no differences on hole number between healthy and wilted trees, sprouting was observed on wilted trees and its rates were 57-68% investigated at Pu-lee and Tung-shiu plantations in March 2003, Study of the rainfall distribution at Pu-lee showed that the total year rainfall amount decreased from 1998 to 2002, and the rainfall amount from 2000 to 2002 was tremendously lower than average amount of 1971-2002, especially the rainfall amount from October 2001 to April 2002 was almost zero. Analysis of satellite images for 2000,2001 and 2002 showed that vegetation indexes on healthy spots were higher than those on silted ones. Although visible wilting trees were not observed 2000 and 2001, vegetation indexes have shown differences between wilted and healthy spots. Visible wilting trees were observed in summer of 2002, but the wilted spots did not spread out since 2000 based on vegetation indexes. In summary, no discoloration on vascular tissues, high percentage of sprouting rates from the wilted trees, low rainfall from October 2001 to April 2002 and no spread out of the wilted spots indicated that the Chinese fir decline was highly probably caused by drought, but not the biotic agents. |
