英文摘要 | The purpose of this study was to find out why certain students repeatedly failed the conversation class. Student Self-reported surveys were gathered over the course of four semesters (Fall 2002 to Spring 2004) from 79 International Trade students attending a low baseline institute of technology. Student reported that poor preparation (22%), lack of effort (16%), lack of involvement in class discussion (13%), low English ability (10%) and nonattendance (6%) were major factors attributed to lack of success. An analysis of the list of factors along with students self-reports on perceived grades and its relation to the teacher and grading practices suggested that grading practices reinforcing student effort did not work for these students. The findings imply that a program enabling unsuccessful students to change their behaviors is needed. Students’ low expectations of themselves and their reluctance to take responsibility of learning necessitates teachers to make proper use of their authority to enforce attendance, require class participation, organize student support to maintain motivation, and encourage positive behaviors to improve student grades. |
