英文摘要 | The objectives of this study were to understand differences in anthropometrical measurements and obesity rates between Taiwan aboriginal and non-aboriginal (i.e., ethnic Han Chinese schoolchildren in Taitung. Seven hundred eighty-five schoolchildren aged 9~11 years old (291 aborigines and 494 non-aborigines) were sampled from 10 elementary schools in Taitung City, and the towns of Tamali, Beinan, and Kuanshan in 2001. Height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, and percent body fat were measured. Non-aboriginal 10-year-old boys were significantly taller than aboriginal boys of the same age. The mean height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, and percent body fat of non-aboriginal boys were significantly higher than those of aboriginal boys. No significant differences in anthropometrical measurements were found between girls of the two different ethnicities. In Taitung, the obesity rates among 9 to 11-year-old boys were 15.4%, 20.2%, and 22.3%; and those were 15.2%, 10.1%, and 12.0% for girls, respectively. Although there was no statistical difference in obesity rates between the two different ethnic groups, the obesity rate of boys was higher than that of girls. There was a minimum height increments, but significant increments in weight and body mass index (BMI) among Taitung schoolchildren compared to those of schoolchildren of the same age and region from the results of the 1993~1996 Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan (NAHSIT 1993~1996). As a result, the obesity rates among Taitung schoolchildren were higher than that of the NAHSIT 1993~1996. This indicates that childhood obesity has tremendously increased even in this remote area of Taiwan. Both BMI and percent body fat were highly correlated to waist circumference in this population. This indicates that BMI and waist circumference might be good indices for assessing childhood obesity. |
