英文摘要 | The receiving transducer could better resolve the shape of each scatterer in the sample volume when the high frequency ultrasound is applied. As a result, scattering properties of blood would be different from those of previous measurements using frequencies lower than 15 MHz. For this reason and the increasing interest in developing high frequency ultrasound systems, ultrasonic backscattering properties of red cells suspended in saline and plasma were explored by measurements at frequencies between 5 and 42.5 MHz and hematocrits ranged from 3 to 35%. Measurements were analyzed by normalizing each result with that acquired from a low hematocrit at 6%. This procedure is to cancel out beam characteristics of the transducer adopted from a new approach that was previously proposed. Results obtained from red cell suspensions at frequencies ranged between 5 and 30 MHz were well consistent with those of previous measurements at frequencies lower than 15 MHz as well as the theoretical packing factor for a spherical scatterer. Measurements at frequencies higher than 30 MHz on the other hand demonstrated a second peak around 25% hematocrit in addition to the first peak near the 13%. Such finding was never reported for measurements at lower frequencies. Whether this is due to shape factor of scatterers corresponding to the applied high frequency remain unclear to date. Features of backscattering from whole blood however were not consistent with those measurements from red cell suspensions, the backscattering exhibited a maximum at a hematocrit between 20 and 30%. The modification of the shape and size of whole blood due to formation of red cell aggregation would account for this phenomenon. |
