| 英文摘要 | It is well documented that decoding is closely related to English-speaking children's word reading ability. However, little research has been done to examine if the same is true for EFL learners. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between EFL beginners' decoding skill and their English word reading ability. Forty-seven Grade 8 and 55 Grade 9 Taiwanese students read aloud 30 monosyllabic nonwords, 30 regular words, and 30 irregular words. High positive correlations were found between the nonword reading measure and the other two word reading measures in both groups. Substantial positive correlations were also found between nonword performance and the students' end of semester English grades in both groups. Analysis of nonword reading errors revealed the students had insufficient knowledge of grapheme-phoneme correspondences. These results indicate that the ability to decode new English words plays an important role in EFL learners' initial reading acquisition and that the traditional phonetic symbol instruction is not effective in developing proficient decoding skill. |
