英文摘要 | This article discusses Chi-sung's (契嵩, 1007-1072) criticism of the Way as it had been interpreted by Han Yu (韓愈, 768-824). It begins by arguing that Ch'i-sung's importance as an intellectual critic lies in his utilization of Confucian Classics to interpret tao-te (道德) and to riticize Han Yu. His involvement in fei Han (非韓, criticism of Han) formed a significant part of the hu-fa (護法, defense of the dharma) objectives to which he dedicated his life. The article then discusses some Sung intellectuals' sense of tsun Han (尊韓, veneration of Han), which arose from their admiration for Han's anti-Buddhist position. It then details how Chi-sung actually undertook criticism of Han amidst the strong anti-Buddhist rhetoric of his time. By analyzing the longest essay of a thirty-essay tract that Ch'i-sung wrote to highlight what he saw as Han Yu's failings in his attempt to redefine the Confucian tradition, this article points out that Ch'i-sung's critical assessment of Han was based on his understanding and interpretation of Confucian Classics such as the Chung-yung (中庸), Ta-hsueh (大學), and I-ching (易經). Using these texts to form his theoretical framework, Ch'i-sung advocated the supremacy of tao-te over jen-i (仁義). He argued that tao-te should encompass jen-i and at the same time disputed Han Yu's interpretation of the Way in which the latter relegated tao-te to a position subordinate to jen-i. His interpretation of tao-te on a spiritual and metaphysical level tallies with the views of some Neo-Confucians such as Ch'eng I (程頤, 1033-1107), Yang Shih (楊時, 1053-1135), and Chang Lei (張耒, 1054-1114). Unfortunately, Ch'i-sung's fellow Buddhists seemed to have been unable to carry on his work. |
